New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole continues to progress toward an injury rehab assignment.
The reigning Cy Young Award winner threw another live bullpen session Saturday at the team's complex in Tampa. Cole threw two 15-pitch "innings" against minor league hitters at Derek Jeter Field.
Cole said he felt good coming out of his second live bullpen session, the first of which took place earlier this week in the Bronx.
"We hit all our goals. We did exactly what we wanted to do today. Threw a lot of strikes, so pretty good," Cole said. "Get after the recovery and try to get back on the bump middle next week."
Cole is expected to throw another live bullpen session roughly five days from Saturday's outing.
The next step is getting into the rehab assignments. There hasn't been an announcement on when that will begin, but Cole continues to take the necessary steps to get there.
Cole is going to need a handful of rehab starts in the minor leagues if he's going to return in June, a possibility he didn't want to rule out.
We'll see what happens during the next bullpen session, but Cole isn't too far away from beginning a rehab stint.
