The 10,000th win for the Yankees franchise also means the club is headed back to the postseason.

With a 4-1 win over the Red Sox on Thursday, the Yankees (87-72) secured a spot in the wild-card game to be played Oct. 6.

Through fits of rain at Yankee Stadium, CC Sabathia delivered five innings of one-run ball, while home runs from Carlos Beltran, Greg Bird and Rob Refsnyder powered the Pinstripes to the win, avoiding a four-game sweep to their bitter rivals.

It's the Yankees' first postseason berth since 2012.

The Yankees have used the long ball to their advantage this season, recording the majors' second-highest homer total this season. With the short porch in right field, the Yankees left-handed bats of Brian McCann, Brett Gardner, Beltran, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew all have double-digit homers this season.

Although the club has experienced a recent slide that has seen Jacoby Ellsbury, Alex Rodriguez, Gardner and McCann all fail to hit above .230 since the All-Star break, they are in position to host the one-game wild-card matchup.

Their opponent remains to be seen as the Astros, Angels and Twins are still in position to secure the second wild card. The Yankees are 3-4 against the Astros this season but are 4-2 vs. the Angels and 5-1 against the Twins.
