The New York Yankees reinstated catcher Jose Trevino from the injured list Thursday, returning the duo behind the plate they had to begin the season.
Trevino has been on the injured list since July 13 he suffered a left quad strain. In the meantime, rookie Austin Wells has been nothing short of magnificent.
Considering the split between Trevino and Wells behind the plate before the former's injury, there are definitely some questions as to how the Yankees will go about utilizing both players.
It appears there may be an answer, and it's one Yankees fans will love to hear.
According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the Yankees will continue giving Wells the bulk of the work behind the dish for the remainder of the regular season.
"Rookie Austin Wells’ impressive play of late means he’ll likely get the bulk of the catching duties for the rest of the regular season," Kuty wrote.
Trevino will get his share of work behind the plate, especially when ace Gerrit Cole takes the mound for his regular starts — his next coming Friday night against the Detroit Tigers.
But the protection Wells has given the Yankees lineup hitting behind Juan Soto and Aaron Judge is far too valuable to put back into a true platoon.
Since Trevino was placed on the injured list, Wells has been arguably the best hitting catcher in Major League Baseball.
During that span, he leads all MLB catchers in fWAR (1.6) and OBP (.410) while ranking fourth in OPS (.938), and second in batting average (.326) and wRC+ (163).
Trevino has been a solid offensive contributor with a near-league average 98 OPS+ and .244 batting average. He's also still a very solid defensive catcher even amid concerns with his arm strength and pop time.
But making Wells, who should be in the mix for the Rookie of the Year award, the full-time starter is the right move considering what's he done over the last month.
