Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina suffered a minor tear to a ligament in his left thumb and will be re-evaluated in a week, the team confirmed Monday.

Molina hopes to return before the end of the season, a sentiment shared by Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak.

"Molina has a slight torn ligament in his left thumb," Mozeliak said. "We're optimistic he'll return this regular season. It was the best news we could have hoped for."

Cardinals fans received actual good news when the team announced pitcher Adam Wainwright has progressed well from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in April.

The addition of Wainwright would bolster an already strong pitching staff that leads MLB in ERA and wins.
