Game 1 of the 2017 World Series featured a pitchers' duel between aces: Dallas Keuchel for the Astros and Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers. Kershaw was better, LA got home runs from Chris Taylor and Justin Turner, and the NL champs won the opener 3-1 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Kershaw struck out 11 in seven innings and allowed just a solo home run to Alex Bregman.

Brandon Morrow and Kenley Jansen each worked a perfect inning of relief to give Kershaw a win in his World Series debut.
FAGAN: Kershaw sizzles on biggest stage
This year's matchup is unique in that the teams were division rivals for more than four decades before the Astros moved to the American League for the 2013 season. SN's Jason Foster has a neat rundown of the biggest moments in the teams' rivalry.
WORLD SERIES: SN experts try to pick a series winner
Weather was supposed to be a factor Tuesday evening: The gametime (8:09 p.m. ET/5:09 p.m. PT) temperature was forecast to be 100 degrees (UPDATE: Official temp was a record 103). There was worry the heat could drain Keuchel and Kershaw and force the teams to turn to their bullpens early. So much for that.

Game 2 will be Wednesday night in LA (8 p.m., Fox). Justin Verlander and Rich Hill are the scheduled staters.

World Series 2017: Astros vs. Dodgers Game 1 score, live updates
(All times Eastern)
FINAL: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
10:42 p.m.: Jansen does his thing, retiring Houston in order. Springer gets the sombrero, Bregman lines to center and Altuve flies to right. Time of game: 2 hours, 28 minutes, the fastest World Series game in 25 years (1992 Game 4, Braves vs. Blue Jays).
End eighth: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
10:30 p.m.: Chris Devenski replaces Peacock on the mound and works a 1-2-3 inning: pinch hitter Charlie Culberson strikeout, Taylor fly to center, Turner strikeout. Kenley Jansen will try to close out Game 1 for the Dodgers in the ninth.
Mid-eighth: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
10:23 p.m.: Morrow gets Houston in order, blunting any criticism that LA skipper Dave Roberts hooked Kershaw (83 pitches) too early: Gonzalez fly to left, Reddick fly to left, pinch hitter Carlos Beltran groundout to first.
End seventh: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
10:17 p.m.: Keuchel gets Puig and Hernandez on groundouts, then departs after allowing a single to Seager. Right-hander Brad Peacock comes on in relief. He walks Forsythe but then gets Barnes to fly to Springer. Keuchel's final line: 6 2/3, six hits, three runs (all earned), one walk, three strikeouts. BREAKING: Kershaw is out of the game. Brandon Morrow will start the eighth. Andre Ethier was in the on-deck circle to hit for Kershaw if Barnes had reached. Kershaw's final line: Seven innings, three hits, one run (earned), no walks, 11 strikeouts.
Mid-seventh: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
9:57 p.m.: Time to stretch after Kershaw works around Altuve's leadoff single: Correa 5-4 fielder's choice, Gurriel 6-4 fielder's choice after Seager bobbles a tailor-made DP ball, McCann flyout to center.
End sixth: Dodgers 3, Astros 1
9:49 p.m.: Keuchel gets the first two outs (Barnes and Kershaw on 6-3s), then walks Taylor and gives up a homer to Turner on a 1-2 pitch.

WEXLER: Taylor, Turner continue to power Dodgers
Related: Turner is No. 6 in SN's ranking of the players in this year's Series. Bellinger fans to end the inning. LA is now in perfect position to win this opener: Kershaw is dealing and the 'pen is fully rested (maybe too rested with four days off?).
Mid-sixth: Astros 1, Dodgers 1
9:36 p.m.: Kershaw is getting close to Koufax's 15 Ks in a World Series game (1963 Game 1 vs. the Yankees). He fans Keuchel for No. 10 and Springer for No. 11 (hat trick for Springer). Bregman grounds to short, and the 'Stros are down in order again.
9:31 p.m.: Fox just showed Tommy Lasorda, Vin Scully, Magic Johnson and Sandy Koufax in the stadium. Speaking of Koufax, I agree with this tweet:
Considering how good Koufax looks at 83 or whatever he might actually *be* immortal
— Michael Baumann (@MJ_Baumann) October 25, 2017
Koufax is 81, for the record.
End fifth, Astros 1, Dodgers 1
9:28 p.m.: Keuchel matches Kershaw's zero: Hernandez strikeout, Seager single, Forsythe 5-4-3 double play. Give Bregman credit for starting the DP with the pick and then the quick relay to Altuve.
Mid-fifth: Astros 1, Dodgers 1
9:21 p.m.: An uber-efficient 1-2-3 frame (six pitches) for Kershaw: McCann groundout to second, Gonzalez groundout to third, Reddick K looking.
9:17 p.m.: Annnnnd, we finally have a sports/entertainment synergy moment on the Fox broadcast: Seth MacFarlane, star of "The Orville," is sitting in a field box.
End fourth: Astros 1, Dodgers 1
9:14 p.m.: A 1-2-3 frame for Keuchel: Turner pops out foul to first, Bellinger grounds out 3-1, Puig grounds to short.
Mid-fourth: Astros 1, Dodgers 1
9:06 p.m.: Bregman answers for Houston with a leadoff homer to left, a line drive into the pavilion.

Kershaw responds by fanning Altuve looking on 3-2 (Altuve argued the call with plate ump Phil Cuzzi), Correa looking and Gurriel swinging. That's eight Ks for Kershaw in four frames against the team that struck out the fewest times in the majors during the regular season. Kershaw has thrown just 51 pitches.
End third: Dodgers 1, Astros 0
8:56 p.m.: LA gets the leadoff man on for the third straight inning as Austin Barnes singles. Kershaw, using on one of Chase Utley's bats, bunts Barnes over to second. Taylor then lines into a double play, Correa to Altuve, as Barnes is caught off second.
Mid-third: Dodgers 1, Astros 0
8:49 p.m.: Kershaw starts the inning by striking out Marwin Gonzalez looking with a #hookfromhell. Josh Reddick follows with a single, but Keuchel, batting in an NL park, Ks trying to bunt and Springer waves at a 90 mph backdoor/backup slider for another strikeout. Springer is halfway to the dreaded golden sombrero.
End second: Dodgers 1, Astros 0
8:38 p.m.: Enrique Hernandez leads off with a single, but Seager immediately hits into a 5-6-3 double play. Logan Forsythe flies to center to end the frame.
Mid-second: Dodgers 1, Astros 0
8:32 p.m.: Kershaw is dealing early; he has another 1-2-3 inning: Carlos Correa flyout to center, Yuli Gurriel strikeout, Brian McCann groundout to second.
End first: Dodgers 1, Astros 0
8:25 p.m.: Keuchel retires the next three batters after the Taylor leadoff homer: Justin Turner strikeout, Cody Bellinger groundout to second, Yasiel Puig groundout to short.
8:18 p.m.: Dodgers leadoff hitter Chris Taylor swings at Keuchel's first pitch and has a much better result than Springer: a long home run into the left-field pavilion. (UPDATE: Statcast estimates the drive traveled 447 feet.) LA strikes first for the 1-0 lead. SN's Ryan Fagan wrote about Taylor and all the other redemption stories on LA's playoff roster.
First pitch. Big message. #WorldSeries pic.twitter.com/OxUM4MvJpM
— MLB (@MLB) October 25, 2017
Mid-first: Astros 0, Dodgers 0
8:15 p.m.: Kershaw retires Houston in order: Springer strikeout, Alex Bregman flyout to left, Jose Altuve groundout to short.
8:11 p.m.: George Springer swings at Clayton Kershaw's first pitch (foul ball), and here we go.
8:03 p.m.: Keith Williams Jr. belts out the national anthem, we have the flyover, and we are minutes away from first pitch. Speaking of that anthem, specifically the finish . . .
