CLEVELAND — Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler made history Wednesday with his leadoff home run in Game 7 of the World Series against the Indians.

It was the first leadoff home run in a winner-take-all World Series game.

Fowler hit a 2-1 pitch from Indians starter Corey Kluber, who had allowed just one run in 12 innings covering his starts in Games 1 and 4. Fowler’s blast cleared the glove of Cleveland's Rajai Davis over the center-field fence and set off a “Let’s Go, Cubs!” chant at Progressive Field.

The last player to lead off any World Series game with a homer was the Giants' Gregor Blanco against the Royals in 2014. There have now been 11 leadoff home runs in World Series history.

Fowler entered the game hitting .224 with two homers in the postseason.
