World Series 2015: Substance spotted on Salvador Perez's shin guard; KC says it's legal image

It's only Game 1 of the World Series between the Mets and Royals, but already there may be controversy.

Just before a production truck power outage caused Fox Sports to lose its broadcast feed, cameras caught Royals catcher Salvador Perez with what appeared be a suspicious substance on his right shin guard.

Don't get too carried away about the pine tar-looking patch; position players are allowed to use pine tar or rosin to help them grip the ball. Perez could require extra grip for his throws, especially on a wet evening, as was the case in Kansas City on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Royals manager Ned Yost defended Perez after the game:

"I don't know what it is. It's brown, I don't know what it is, but it's not illegal," he said. "It's illegal for the pitcher to have a foreign substance, not a catcher."

UPDATE 2: Per CBSSports.com, Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters, "It's nothing."
