Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez was told after his start in Game 1 of the World Series that his father had died earlier in the day. Royals manager Ned Yost said Wednesday he expects Volquez to start Game 5 on Sunday.

Yost added that Chris Young will also make his scheduled start in Game 4 on Saturday.

Young's situation isn't comparable to Volquez's, but from a baseball standpoint it's worth noting that Young threw 53 pitches in three innings of relief Tuesday.

Yost said the team will treat the outing "just like a short start and then coming back a day early."

Volquez joined his family in the Dominican Republic for his father’s funeral on Wednesday. Yost said Volquez told his teammates, "I'll see you in New York" before he left. Games 3, 4 and (if necessary) 5 will be at Citi Field.

The Royals won Game 1, 5-4 in 14 innings. Eric Hosmer's bases-loaded sacrifice fly brought in Alcides Escobar with the winning run. The game was the longest in World Series history.

UPDATE: KC took a 2-0 series lead Wednesday with a 7-1 victory. Johnny Cueto pitched a complete-game two-hitter, and said afterward that he dedicated his start to Volquez's father and family.
