The Mets and Braves are set for a one-of-a-kind, season-defining doubleheader on Monday.
Each team — sporting identical 88-72 records — needs just one win to clinch a playoff spot, with the NL Wild Card series set to commence on Tuesday. But neither team is guaranteed a spot, either. The idle Diamondbacks (89-73) would make the playoffs should either New York or Atlanta sweep Monday's doubleheader, with the losing team heading home.
The two teams were originally set to play a three-game series last week. But after the Braves won Game 1, Hurricane Helene intervened, forcing the final two games to be postponed. That set the stage for a doubleheader on Monday, one day after the regular season ended for the other 28 teams.
The Mets, hoping to make the playoffs for just the second time in the past eight years, snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday. Francisco Lindor — battling a back injury that caused him to miss nine games — drove in two runs and scored twice to pace the offense in a 5-0 win.
The Braves are eyeing a seventh consecutive playoff appearance, and are still in position despite a slew of injuries. Atlanta's five-game winning streak ended with a 4-2 loss to the Royals on Sunday; a win would have sealed a playoff spot.
Atlanta will start rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach in Game 1, opposite Tylor Megill for the Mets. Game 2 starters are contingent on the outcome of Game 1, but Chris Sale and Luis Severino loom as options.
