The Minnesota Twins were in control of the final American League Wild Card spot entering the month of September. However, they endured an epic collapse and ultimately missed the postseason.
In order to get back to the postseason in 2025, they'll need to make some offseason moves to help them bounce back.
They could potentially find a way to bolster their offense and replace free agent slugger Carlos Santana.
Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report believes that the Twins could potentially target slugger Paul Goldschmidt.
"The Athletic's Katie Woo reported that the St. Louis Cardinals 'are expected to part ways with' first baseman Paul Goldschmidt," Beaston wrote. "The Reds, Angels, Mariners, and Twins are all teams that could use upgrades at the position."
Goldschmidt is coming off perhaps the worst season of his career. The slugger just turned 37 years old and hit just .245 with a .716 OPS in 2024.
He is now three years removed from winning the National League MVP Award with St. Louis, but he could certainly benefit from a change of scenery.
St. Louis is expected to enter a rebuild while the Twins would give him a chance to play for a winner. Goldschmidt could provide them with a strong right-handed presence in the middle of their lineup and could be ideal to replace Santana should the latter walk in free agency.
It will be interesting to see how the 2024 season impacts Goldschmidt's market. He still is productive and could give the Twins a big boost offensively after their second-half collapse.
