Dramatic night in big leagues includes brawl, walkoff winners image

The Orioles and Royals will likely be without a player each for a while following a benches-clearing brawl Tuesday night.

After Royals starter Yordano Ventura hit O's shortstop Manny Machado with a pitch in the fifth inning of Baltimore's eventual 9-1 victory, Machado charged the mound. He landed a solid right cross to Ventura's face as the benches emptied.

There was drama of a different sort in Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis and Los Angeles with the Reds, Tigers, Twins and Dodgers all winning in walkoff fashion.

The Tigers entered the ninth inning down two runs to the Blue Jays before rallying for a 3-2 win in 10 innings. Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez had everything working; he had struck out 12 while allowing just one hit through eight innings. Jose Iglesias singled to lead off the ninth, then Ian Kinsler doubled him in to chase Sanchez. The Blue Jays bullpen proceeded to blow the lead. Miguel Cabrera tied the game with an RBI double off closer Roberto Osuna. Kinsler then won the game in the 10th with a walkoff single against Joe Biagini.

The Reds had a five-run lead over the Cardinals after seven innings before the Cardinals tied it with three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Joey Votto's solo shot to center field off Cardinals reliever Kevin Siegrist gave the Reds a 7-6 victory.

Brian Dozier's two-out, two-run blast in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Twins to a 6-4 win over the Marlins at Target Field.

Trayce Thompson ended Tuesday's game at Dodger Stadium with a walkoff homer, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Rockies.

The Brewers and Rockies are the only MLB teams to not yet have a walkoff win this season.

Player of the Day

Chris Carter, 1B, Brewers: Carter was easily the best player on the field in Milwaukee's 5-4 win over Oakland. He went yard twice and drove in all five Brewers runs. Carter is only batting .227 on the season, but he has 16 home runs.

Highlight

Astros right fielder Jake Marisnick made a great catch in foul territory against the Rangers.

Three things to know

— After Brewers pitcher Zach Davies took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the A's, the Brewers turned the ball over to Tyler Thornburg. The Milwaukee reliever pitched a perfect eighth inning and has retired 26 consecutive batters, tying Teddy Higuera for third on the franchise's all-time list.

— Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is having a rough season. He went 0 for 5 in this team's 6-4, 11-inning loss to the Twins on Tuesday, dropping his average to .197. Two strikeouts pushed his season total to 70. To put that figure into perspective, Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn struck out 70 times total between the 1993 and 1996 seasons. Stanton does not lead the big leagues, however; Rockies rookie shortstop Trevor Story has 85 strikeouts this year after getting the golden sombrero in Colorado's loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

— The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Mets on Tuesday by identical 3-1 scores. The Pirates have won nine straight versus the Mets dating to the start of last season, the longest streak against the Mets in Pittsburgh history. The Pirates previously had four eight-game streaks against the Mets.

What's next

Royals (30-28) at Orioles (34-23), 7:05 p.m. ET: Will cooler heads prevail following Tuesday's fracas? Edinson Volquez (5-5, 4.03 ERA) will take the mound for visiting Kansas City while Baltimore will start Chris Tillman (7-1, 3.33).

Nationals (35-23) at White Sox (29-29), 8:10 p.m. ET: James Shields will make his White Sox debut following last weekend's trade with the Padres. Shields (2-7, 4.28 ERA) struggled in San Diego, and the White Sox obviously are hoping he can turn things around. It won't be easy to beat the potent Nationals, especially because opposing Shields will be Max Scherzer (6-4, 3.87). Shields does own a 4-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in 11 career starts at U.S. Cellular Field.
