Troy Tulowitzki injury update: Yankees infielder leaves game with calf strain, will undergo MRI image

The injuries keep piling up for the Yankees.

Infielder Troy Tulowitzki left New York's matchup against the Tigers on Wednesday with a calf strain, according to USA Today. He'll undergo an MRI.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the game Tulowitzki is likely to go on the injured list. New York will call up Thairo Estrada to replace Tulowitzki on the roster, according to MLB.com.

Coming into 2019, Tulowitzki had played a combined 66 games since the 2017 season and missed all of 2018 as he dealt with bone spurs in both of his heels. The 34-year-old hasn't played more than 131 games in a season since 2011 and has failed to play more than 150 games since 2009.

While Tulowitzki is one of the best hitting infielders in the game when he is healthy, he has simply struggled to avoid injuries.

"His capability is off the charts," former Rockies teammate Nolan Arenado said in 2018. "His talent is top 10 in baseball for me. A big shortstop who can move, can make every play, can hit homers. He's a five-tool shortstop who's 6-3, 6-4. I know the talent Tulo is. When he was here, he was always getting hurt. But he was capable of hitting 40-plus (homers) a year. He had that ability. He just couldn't stay healthy, unfortunately."

Tulowitzki is one of the many Yankees dealing with injuries already in 2019. Before the season started, New York lost center fielder Aaron Hicks to a shoulder injury, starter Luis Severino to a rotator cuff problem, CC Sabathia to knee surgery and Dellin Betances to a shoulder problem, as well.

Since then, third baseman Miguel Andujar suffered a labrum tear, Giancarlo Stanton was put on the IL with a biceps strain and now Tulowitzki is dealing with a calf issue.
