Days before the MLB postseason gets underway, the winners of the top minor leagues in the land face off Saturday in the Triple-A National Championship Game.
The Pacific Coast League champion Sugar Land Space Cowboys and International League champion Omaha Storm Chasers will meet in Las Vegas for a single game with bragging rights on the line.
The Space Cowboys — the Astros' Triple-A affiliate — clinched the PCL title with a win over Reno on Wednesday night. Just one year after finishing with the worst record in the league, Sugar Land posted the best record in the minors at 93-56.
The Storm Chasers, a Royals affiliate, needed three games to get by Columbus for the IL crown, and will play in the Triple-A final for the fourth time. Omaha won back-to-back titles in 2013-14 after falling in the 2011 edition.
Since the inaugural Triple-A Championship Game in 2006, nine of the 17 titles have been won by the representative from the Pacific Coast League.
