Trevor Story's Rookie of the Year run will end prematurely.

The Rockies announced Tuesday the first-year shortstop has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. Story later said he'll have surgery on the thumb and doesn't expect to return unless the Rockies reach the postseason.

Story, the National League home run leader and its Rookie of the Year front-runner, last played July 30, when he was injured on a headfirst slide into second base.

The 23-year-old has taken the major leagues by storm this season. After an unprecedented power surge to start the year, Story managed to sustain impressive batting numbers in the NL's top run-producing offense with a .272/.341/.567 slash line and 72 RBIs. His 27 home runs rank fourth in all of baseball.

Story's injury is a significant blow to the Rockies, who are in the thick of the NL wild-card race. They trailed the Marlins by 4 1/2 games entering Tuesday's play.

Colorado recalled infielder Rafael Ynoa from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill Story's roster spot.
