It won't be long before a short drive on Interstate 15 north of San Diego will allow you to cross paths with two of the greatest hitters who ever lived.

The California Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution that would rename a five-mile stretch of I-15 the Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The bill must still pass the state Senate and be approved by Gov. Jerry Brown, but that figures to be a formality.

The change would cover I-15 between Pomerado Road and Scripps Poway Parkway — fitting, since Gwynn died of cancer on June 16, 2014 at Pomerado Hospital in Poway.

The geography also is notable because that stretch is just south of where the interstate meets the Ted Williams Freeway, named for the San Diego-born Red Sox legend.

While Gwynn wasn't a native, he certainly was San Diego's favorite son. His Hall of Fame career with the Padres and subsequent 12-year stint as baseball coach at San Diego State cemented that standing.
