Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum has been diagnosed with a degenerative condition in his hips, though the affliction isn't thought to be career-threatening.

Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Monday that the two-time Cy Young winner received cortisone shots in both hips after an MRI revealed the condition.

Lincecum visited Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd, an orthopedist with the Tennessee Titans who specializes in hip injuries.

“There’s some stuff going on there,” Bochy told the San Jose Mercury-News. “He did see some degenerative things, which is normal with athletes.”

Lincecum, who has been on the disabled list since June 28 with a bruised right forearm, is expected to start throwing again in a few days.

In 15 starts this season, Lincecum is 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA. He has struck out 60 batters in 76 1/3 innings.
