Rumors of Wainwright's potential retirement ran rampant during the 2018 season, as it was the final year of his contract with the Cardinals.

"I want to see how things end, but it would be really surprising to me if I came out and said I'm retiring," Wainwright told MLB.com in August. "One thing is for sure: whatever is in store for me, I'll be ready for it. And I'm OK with that."

Wainwright started just eight games for the Cardinals in 2018 going 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA. His 148 career victories are fifth in franchise history while his 1,623 strikeouts are second only to Hall-of-Famer Bob Gibson in Cardinals history.
