The Braves received good news Saturday on outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr.; he suffered only a contusion to his left pinky when he was hit in the hand by a fastball from Phillies reliever Sam Coonrod.
The team said X-rays were negative and that Acuña is day to day.
Coonrod's 98 mph pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning deflected off the hand as Acuña was preparing to swing. Acuña was in obvious pain as he slammed his helmet to the ground, grabbed the hand and pirouetted several times. He then walked to the Braves' dugout, accompanied by manager Brian Snitker and two team trainers.
Acuña has been hit by pitches three times in 2021 and 22 times during his four-year MLB career.
The Atlanta star has already missed time because of injury this season; he sat out two games in late April with an abdominal strain he suffered April 18 against the Cubs in Chicago.
Acuña, 23, leads the Braves with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs this season. One of the home runs came off Coonrod on April 11 in Atlanta.
