Ron Gardenhire favorite to become Padres manager, report says image

Ron Gardenhire has emerged as the favorite to fill the Padres' vacant managerial position, according to ESPN .

Gardenhire, who went 1,068-1,039 in 13 seasons with the Twins, conducted his second interview  in San Diego on Sunday and is one of two finalists for the position.

Rick Sofield is the other finalist, according to the ESPN report. Sofield currently serves as the Pirates third base coach. He has never managed in the majors.

The Padres are without a manager after they relieved Bud Black of his duties after just 65 games last year. Pat Murphy filled in as interim manager, but the team was always going to search for a more prominent solution.
