Hall of Famer Rod Carew, who suffered a massive heart attack this fall in Southern California, is recovering, rehabbing and looking forward to his 50th spring training in March, according to Sports Illustrated.

Carew, 70, was playing golf Sept. 20 in Corona, Calif., when he was stricken with the kind of coronary his wife, Rhonda, says is called "the widow-maker."

He since has had a device that helps his heart beat implanted and is now home and rehabbing, according to the story.

"I am thankful to the wonderful team of doctors and caring nurses that have given me a second chance at life," Carew said. "They do wonderful work. Thanks to them, I can eagerly anticipate being on the field for my 50th spring training this March. I also look forward to returning to Cooperstown this July to mark the 25th anniversary of my induction in the Hall of Fame."
