In a strange sequence, Brandon Phillips was hit not once, not twice, but three times during an at-bat Monday against Mets ace Noah Syndergaard, forcing an early exit for the Reds second baseman.

After fouling two balls off his leg, Phillips was struck in the left hand by a 98 mph fastball in the top of the fourth inning.

The painful at-bat ended with Phillips doubled over in pain before exiting the game with a left ring finger injury.

X-rays taken during the game were negative, the Reds announced.

Phillips recorded a hit in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak on the road against the Mets to 33 games.
