The MLB trade deadline is roughly a week away, and the Boston Red Sox have yet to make a move to improve their roster for a playoff push.
As things currently stand, the Red Sox are two games out of a playoff spot after losing their last four while the Kansas City Royals have won their previous four. Still, the addition of a right-handed bat or a pitcher or two could really improve their chances of making a run.
Earlier this week, Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, who has missed most of the year with a shoulder injury, spoke on whether or not this team was deserving of reinforcements at the deadline.
“Yeah. I think so,” Story said (via. MassLive). ”Obviously, they’ve exceeded a lot of expectations from people outside the room. I think we expected ourselves to be in this situation. I think we will (add). The Red Sox organization has never not gone for it while holding a position like this. I feel good about that.”
“It definitely sends a message. More than anything, it sends a message to the fans and everybody involved in the organization that, ‘We believe you guys can do it.’”
While that statement may have been true in years past, the Red Sox seem to be acting differently in recent seasons. There seems to be a directive to try to win while keeping costs down; something not often achieved in sports.
At the same, veteran guys like closer Kenley Jansen, who is not with the team right now in Colorado due to his heart condition, know exactly what this team could use.
“You can never go wrong adding more pitching,” Jansen said. “Another right-handed bat will be helpful. We’ll see how it goes.”
If Boston doesn't add this four-game skid could snowball into another second-half collapse.
