The Boston Red Sox are starting to see injuries to their bullpen again, as Chris Martin landed on the injured list last week due to elbow inflammation and Justin Slaten was placed on the injured list for the same reason on Friday.
On Saturday, NESN's Tom Caron reported that Martin is now being shut down after feeling more discomfort in his elbow. Caron also reported that there's no additional imaging planned, but the reliever will rest and hope to return later in the year.
Martin hasn't been as good in 2024 as he had in his first season in Boston, posting a 3.42 ERA and a 1.025 WHIP while striking out 29 batters in his 26 appearances. He also dealt with anxiety issues earlier in the season, which landed him on the injured list.
The Red Sox bullpen currently includes Kenley Jansen, Brennan Bernardino, Cam Booser, Bailey Horn, Zack Kelly, Greg Weissert and Josh Winckowski. They also have Isaiah Campbell, Brad Keller and Trey Wingenter who they could call up from Triple-A Worcester.
