In a bizarre twist of career path, former Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is joining the Boston Red Sox as a first base coach, the Boston Globe reported Saturday.

Amaro, who has no coaching experience, was fired in Philadelphia in September after spending 17 years in the organization’s front office as an assistant GM and GM. He joined the club’s front office in 1998 immediately after his seven-year playing career — the final two with the Phillies.

The Boston Globe reported earlier in the month that Amaro is interested in managing, so maybe joining the Red Sox in his new role is the first step in that process.
The Phillies replaced Amaro on Friday with Matt Klentak as the team’s new GM.
