The Boston Red Sox were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles 7-1 in the first of their three-game series at Fenway Park on Tuesday, and the two teams meet again for Game 2 on Wednesday.
Boston will send Kutter Crawford to the mound while the Orioles will go with Cole Irvin.
Alex Cora's lineup will include shortstop Romy Gonzalez, who was called up this week with Bobby Dalbec optioned to Triple-A Worcester. Here's what the lineup will look like:
- Jarren Duran LF
- Tyler O’Neill RF
- Rafael Devers 3B
- Triston Casas 1B
- Romy Gonzalez SS
- Pablo Reyes 2B
- Masataka Yoshida DH
- Connor Wong C
- Ceddanne Rafaela CF
Crawford has pitched well so far in 2024, giving up just one earned run on two hits and four walks in 10.2 innings. In his career, he's allowed hits to six different Orioles - Austin Hays (2-for-2), Jorge Mateo (1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs), Cedric Mullins (2-for-5), Adley Rutschman (2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs), Anthony Santander (2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs) and Ramon Urias (1-for-4).
Irvin was not his best in his lone start against the Kansas City Royals, giving up four runs, eight hits and two walks in five innings of work. He's allowed hits to only three current Red Sox - Triston Casas (1-for-1 with a home run and three RBIs), Rafael Devers (3-for-8) and Masataka Yoshida (1-for-3 with two RBIs).
Boston will need to secure this win to avoid their first series loss of the season and stop a potential skid after a horrendous day of news before their home opener.
