The Boston Red Sox have had some bad luck with injuries to their pitching staff this year, and that continued last week when left-handed starter James Paxton suffered a partial tear of his right calf in the first inning of a game against the Houston Astros.
On Friday, Boston moved Paxton to the 60-day injured list, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster. To fill that spot, Boston selected left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez from Triple-A Worcester. Rodiguez will join the big league club, as the Red Sox have optioned right-handed reliever Greg Weissert back.
Rodriguez, 32, started the season with Boston but struggled early, posting a 6.55 ERA (5.26 FIP) and a 1.545 WHIP in 11 appearances (11 innings) before being designated for assignment. He's been much better with Worcester, posting a 1.88 ERA and a 1.116 WHIP while striking out 13 batters in 14 1/3 innings.
Weissert, 29, has been back and forth between the MLB and Triple-A levels this year. He's recorded a 4.10 ERA (4.14 FIP) and a 1.448 WHIP in 48 1/3 innings this year for Boston. In his two appearances during his most recent stint, he allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two in 1/3 innings to the Astros.
