The Boston Red Sox have had a number of players get big league experience this year for the first time, and the most recent is infielder Nick Sogard, who made his MLB debut on Friday in a game against the Texas Rangers.
Sogard hit eighth in Boston's lineup, and in just his second at-bat, he singled to right against Jose Urena, driving in Connor Wong and Wilyer Abreu for his first hit and first two RBIs of his career. The 26-year-old may have only recorded that one hit in his debut, but as he said after the game, it was good for him to do even that in his first game.
“That definitely was a nice weight off the shoulders,” said Sogard (via. MassLive) after the Red Sox's Friday night win over the Rangers, “and to drive in a few runs and feel like I helped the team win today was a good feeling.”
Sogard also got the start at shortstop in Boston's second game of the series, finishing 1-for-3 (a single in the eighth inning) with a walk. He was on base twice with the bases loaded, but other batters were unable to drive him (or any runs) in after that.
The Red Sox have been looking for help in their middle infield with David Hamilton scuffling recently, so Sogard could end up getting quite a bit of playing time if he keeps getting on base.
