The Boston Red Sox farm system has been a topic of discussion recently with the additions of some new players through the draft and some subtractions through trades in recent weeks.
Two lesser-known prospects got some much-deserved recognition this week, as shortstop Mikey Romero and right-handed pitcher Yordanny Monegro were named South Atlantic League Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Romero, 20, was Boston's first-round pick in 2022. He moved up to High-A Greenville for three games last year and has stayed there to start the 2024 season. In 50 games this year, he's hit .281 with an .857 OPS, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. In the last week (five games), he's hit .480 with a 1.439 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBIs.
Monegro, 21, was signed as an international free agent in 2020. He moved up to Greenville for two starts last year and remained there in 2024. He's made 10 appearances (nine starts), posting a 3.95 ERA and a 1.220 WHIP while striking out 49 batters in 41 innings. He made one start in the last week, tossing five hitless innings while striking out six.
