The Boston Red Sox entered Thursday afternoon's matchup against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park with a chance to earn a series sweep, and they did just that with a 6-5 win in extra innings
Boston's starting pitcher, Nick Pivetta, was great, allowing just one hit and two walks in his seven innings of work while striking out 10 batters. He took a no-hitter into the seventh, but a two-out triple off the centerfield wall ended the bid.
Things got a little loopy from there, as Justin Slaten entered in relief and recorded two hits while allowing two hits. The Red Sox turned to Brennan Bernardino to record one out for the second night in a row, but he allowed two singles and two runs to score and tie the game. Kenley Jansen came in for the ninth and got some help with Jarren Duran nailing the go-ahead runner at home.
In extra innings, Zack Kelly threw a scoreless 10th but allowed two runs in the 11th to tie the game again. Greg Weissert got the 12th, and he closed it out, allowing just the ghost runner to score.
Boston's bats weren't great in this one, recording just eight hits and striking out 14 times over 12 innings. Their first two runs were scored due to impressive baserunning, as David Hamilton and Tyler O'Neill completed two successful double steals, allowing Rafael Devers to drive in a run both times. O'Neill was impressive in extra innings, with an RBI single in the 11th and an RBI double in the 12th.
The win improves Boston's record to 47-39 on the season and 27-16 on the road. It also puts them eight games over .500 for the first time in 2024. They'll take on the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for the first of three games on Friday.
