Boston Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer has been putting together an impressive 2024 campaign for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, hitting .300 with an .855 OPS, six home runs, 29 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
While Boston is multiple levels away for him, many believe that Mayer will be up within the next year and making an impact for the Red Sox with some regularity.
It's not often that the prospects get to pick the brains of the veterans outside of Spring Training, but Mayer told the "Section 10 Podcast" that there's one guy he's been in communication with.
"Trevor Story, for sure," Mayer said. "He was here last year when he was rehabbing... he hit a (expletive) bomb too. He's a great guy. He reaches out to me all the time. We text. We talk shop, talk baseball.
"When he was here, big leaguers play like four innings and then bounce, he was cool enough to sit in the dugout with me and talk throughout the whole game, just picking his brain. Obviously, we play the same position. He was hitting bombs at Coors Field when I was in elementary school."
As Mayer stated, the two play the same position, so there's a chance that one of them will have to move when the prospect is ready to go for Boston. However, it seems like Story is doing what he can to help the kid prepare to make it in the MLB, so he may be willing to switch back to second base if needed.
