The Boston Red Sox have just had some awful luck with injuries this season, especially to their pitching staff, and on Tuesday, things got worse.
After placing right-handed reliever Lucas Sims on the injured list earlier in the afternoon, Boston also placed right-handed reliever Luis Garcia on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. To fill his spot, the team has recalled Josh Winckowski from Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox acquired the 37-year-old at the trade deadline for the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a quartet of prospects, including Niko Kavadas, Matthew Lugo, Yeferson Vargas and Ryan Zeferjahn.
Since then, Garcia has appeared in 11 games for Boston, tossing 11 1/3 innings and posting a 10.32 ERA and a 1.941 WHIP while striking out 11. Meanwhile, Kavadas and Zeferjahn have both made their MLB debuts for Los Angeles without much success.
With Garcia and Sims joining James Paxton on the injured list, four of the Red Sox's five moves at the deadline are not contributing to the big league club (Quinn Priester is pitching in Triple-A.
Danny Jansen, the fifth player acquired at the deadline, has been horrible over the last month, as he's hitting just .156 in August.
