During the eighth inning of the Boston Red Sox's 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, outfielder Jarren Duran swiped home plate to give his team a 4-2 lead and provide some breathing room for his team's bullpen.
After the game, he spoke about the decision to go on that play.
"Me and Huddy (Red Sox third base coach Kyle Hudson) had talked about it that if Raffy (Rafael Devers) goes when he gave him the sign, and if they throw through that I was going to go home," Duran explained.
However, he wanted everyone to know the team's success wasn't all on him in this win.
"I wouldn't say that it was all that my handprints were all over it," Duran said. "(Expletive) Rafa, Reese (McGuire) hit a homer, our pitching was really good. It was a good team effort. We all put it together to win this game. We had to get everybody involved."
Interestingly enough, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, Duran recalled a time that he had stolen home in Triple-A due to a catcher's soft throws back to the pitcher. That catcher was apparently now Rays catcher Ben Rortvedt, whose tag Duran slid under at home.
It's crazy how baseball works.
