The Boston Red Sox have had a hard time finding a consistent group of relievers to work with this season, as they've dealt with some injuries and fatigue that have hurt even their best guys out of the bullpen.
Ahead of Monday's doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Red Sox announced that they've designated left-handed pitcher Joely Rodrigeuz for assignment and recalled right-handed pitcher Brad Keller.
Rodriguez, 32, started the season with Boston but was sent down to Triple-A Worcester back in April. He was recalled for the three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and pitched in every game, allowing one run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. On the season, he's posted a 5.93 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings over 14 outings.
Keller, 29, signed with Boston originally back in May, but he's spent a chunk of the season down in Triple-A. In 10 appearances (20 2/3 innings) for the big league club, he's allowed 13 runs (5.66 ERA) on 24 hits and seven walks (1.50 WHIP) while striking out 17 batters.
Neither of these players are great options. Boston seems to be trying to just hope for the best with the bullpen as they try to fight for a playoff spot.
