The Boston Red Sox have been a pretty average team so far this season, putting together a 38-35 record through the first 73 games of their 2024 campaign.
However, over the last week, they've won five of their last seven, including two games against the best team in the American League and two against the best team in the National League.
With roughly 40 days until the MLB trade deadline, the Red Sox, like many teams, could buy and improve their roster or they could sell and recoup some prospects or other pieces back in deals.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently spoke with The Athletic's Jenn McCaffrey, and he shared his thoughts on his team buying or selling at this year's deadline.
"It’s difficult and one thing that I’ve pointed to is it’s extraordinarily difficult to try to accomplish both," Breslow said. "So there are meaningful games to play between now and the deadline. Every time we set foot on the field, we’ll learn something new. I think what we have to be careful of is trying to straddle the line. But I think the most important thing to come out of our play last week is that there’s a really exciting group of players that are taking the field every night.
"So I think we can all see the reasons for optimism. Exactly how that materializes over the next five weeks or so, six weeks, remains to be seen. But I think, irrespective of that, it’s an exciting time to be in this organization. I think it’s an exciting time to be a fan of the organization. And we’re going to learn more and be realistic and also be decisive."
In some years under previous Red Sox CBO Chaim Bloom, the team would be non-commital and try to both add and subtract talent from the roster. That doesn't appear to be the way that Breslow's looking to go.
With a strong farm system, they're primed to start making some deals, but if the team falls off in the next month or so, it may make more sense to move on from some players who are coming to the end of their time in Boston.
