On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox welcomed the Oakland Athletics to Fenway Park for the second of three games in the series, and they dropped the contest 5-2.
Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta didn't have his best night, but it was reminiscent of Brayan Bello on Tuesday, as he gave up hits (six) and runs (four) but racked up the strikeouts (10) over 6 2/3 innings. Josh Winckowski entered in relief, giving up two hits and one run over the final 2 1/3 inning.
Boston's offense struggled throughout the night, despite the team putting a number of right-handed bats against lefty starter JP Sears. The team struck out 12 total times and drove in just two runs on eight hits. The two RBIs came from a Rob Refsnyder (1-for-3) solo home run) and a Tyler O'Neill (1-for-3) infield single. Rafael Devers, Masataka Yoshida and Jamie Westbrook were all held hitless.
The loss drops the Red Sox to 50-41 and 221-24 at home. The two teams will meet again on Thursday with the winner taking the series.
