The Pittsburgh Pirates briefly sniffed contention earlier this year and even had a shot to take one of the three National League Wild Card spots.
However, they have since taken a nosedive and fallen to last place in the NL Central. Now their hopes of reaching the postseason are slim to none, but they can still possibly take steps forward in 2025.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report predicted that the Pirates will sign veteran slugger Justin Turner to bolster their offense and add leadership to their clubhouse.
"Re-signing Andrew McCutchen to another one-year deal and adding veteran run-producer Justin Turner to fill a void at first base will ensure there is a veteran presence in a young Pittsburgh locker room, and both of those guys have shown they still have plenty left in the tank," Reuter wrote.
Turner is approaching 40 years old, but still is a productive hitter and can easily bolster a starting lineup. This year, the slugger is hitting .249 with nine home runs, 45 RBI, and a .708 OPS, though he hit .276 with 23 home runs in 2023 with the Boston Red Sox.
The Pirates could certainly use a veteran presence with all the young players in their mix. They already have Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz, and Bryan De La Cruz in their lineup, but Turner could give them the offensive boost they need.
Turner still brings power from the right side of the plate and the ability to play multiple positions on the field while also being able to serve as a designated hitter.
It will be interesting to see how his market plays out this winter and if the Pirates will be in the mix for him.
