Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera was arrested Monday night after he was allegedly seen assaulting his girlfriend at an Atlantic City casino, NBC Sports Philadelphia reported Tuesday.

According to police, Herrera, 27, is accused of leaving visible marks on his 20-year-old girlfriend at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino.

Upon arriving at the scene, the woman "had visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that was sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend, David Odubel Herrera, during a dispute," police reported.

According to CBS Philly, the woman refused medical attention and Herrera was arrested in his hotel room around 8:30 p.m. ET without incident. He was later released from custody and given a summons to appear in court at a later date.

Major League Baseball has placed Herrera on administrative leave as it investigates the report, MLB.com said.

The Phillies released a statement later Tuesday confirming he had been placed on leave, saying the team takes "any domestic violence accusation seriously."

Herrera, who is from Venezuela, was drafted by the Rangers in 2008 as an international free agent at age 16. He was then acquired by the Phillies from the Rangers in 2014 and made his MLB debut on Opening Day 2015.

Named an All-Star in 2016, Herrera signed a five-year, $30.5 million contract extension with the team that same year.

He's struggling this season, hitting just .222 with a .629 OPS, a number that if it holds up would be the lowest of his career by more than 100 points.
