Major League Baseball's latest pitching phenom is set for his biggest test yet.
Paul Skenes — the Pirates' 6-foot-6, flame-throwing right-hander — will take the mound against the Dodgers and their vaunted lineup on Wednesday evening.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of LSU, Skenes has quickly asserted himself as a force at the big league level. In four starts, he has a 2.45 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 22 innings; in his second MLB start, he hurled six no-hit innings against the Cubs, doing so in domineering fashion.
But Skenes is yet to face a beast quite like the Dodgers, with their triumvirate of MVPs atop the lineup. Needless to say, Skenes squaring off against Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Shohei Ohtani will be must-watch TV.
