It came down to the final game of the regular season, but the Braves made it to the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. Now the question is whether Atlanta has anything left in the tank as it travels to San Diego for the wild-card round.
Wracked by injuries all season, the Braves revealed Monday that veteran ace and likely Cy Young winner Chris Sale is dealing with back spasms that likely will keep him out of the first round of the postseason. That doesn't bode well for their chances, but they've overcome plenty of obstacles just to make it this far so they can't be counted out.
The Padres have had their stretches of instability this season, too, with Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Joe Musgrove among those missing extended periods of time. But Mike Schildt has made it all work in his return to the dugout, keeping the Padres within striking distance of the eventual NL West champion Dodgers into the final week of the regular season.
