Xander Boegarts extends streak for Red Sox, but Orioles crush seven HRs in slugfest image

The Orioles pounded seven home runs Thursday to beat the Red Sox 12-7. One bit of good news for Boston: Shortstop Xander Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to 26 games.

Mark Trumbo and Adam Jones smashed two home runs apiece to lead the Orioles, while Manny Machado, Pedro Alvarez and Francisco Pena each hit one. Baltimore scored twice in the fourth and then scored in every inning until the ninth after that.

Baltimore's win spoiled a big night for Bogaerts, who is close to matching teammate Jackie Bradley Jr.'s season-high 29-game streak. In fact, Bogaerts and Bradley are just the third pair of teammates in the last 75 years to have hit streaks of at least 25 games in the same season. Bogaerts went 2 for 5 with a run scored and three RBIs on Thursday. He has 44 hits during his 26-game streak.

Trumbo has been a revelation for his new team, with 17 home runs already this season. He didn't reach that total until late August last year.

The Orioles have scored 25 runs combined in their last two games — both wins against the Red Sox — and now trail Boston by only one game in the American League East. Their seven-homer effort Thursday came a day after the Orioles scored 13 runs without hitting a home run.

Player of the Day

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner continued his sparkling season by tossing 7 2/3 scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over the Braves. Bumgarner struck out 11 batters and gave up just four hits as he improved to 7-2 with a 1.91 ERA. He also hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning.

Twins shortstop Eduardo Nunez cruises to an inside-the-park home run:

Three things to know

— Marlins starter Wei-Yin Chen had his no-hit bid broken up after six innings, which was one out shy of the longest no-hit bid of his career (6 1/3 in 2012 against Mariners).

— Cubs starters have a 0.89 ERA over their last six games. Kyle Hendricks outdueled Dodgers rookie Julio Urias on Thursday, allowing just two runs in eight innings as he improved to 4-4 on the season.

— Brewers shortstop Jonathan Villar, who hit a home run Thursday, leads the majors with 19 stolen bases. The last shortstop to lead the majors in stolen bases was Jose Reyes, with 78 in 2007.

What's next

Mets (29-23) at Marlins (29-25) 7:10 p.m. ET: Noah Syndergaard (5-2, 1.84 ERA) has been terrific this season. The flamethrower was even used for an inning out of the bullpen this week. He will face off against Tom Koehler (3-5, 4.50 ERA) and the sneaky-good Marlins.

Giants (34-22) at Cardinals (28-26) 8:15 p.m. ET: Johnny Cueto (8-1, 2.31 ERA) has returned to form for San Francisco this season. He will look to continue his success against a struggling Adam Wainwright (5-3, 5.71 ERA) and the Cardinals, who have lost five of their last nine games.
