Oral Roberts will make its second College World Series appearance this weekend when it opens against TCU.

The Golden Eagles aren't the most decorated team in college baseball, but they have been a familiar face in the postseason, with almost three decades of NCAA Tournament appearances and a 15-year streak of winning both the regular-season and conference tournament trophies.

This year, they are coming to Omaha 51-12 after inching past Oregon in the deciding game of their best-of-three super regional series.

The Sporting News has everything you need to know about the Golden Eagles, including where the university is located, how it got its name and nickname and its College World Series history.

Where is Oral Roberts located?

Oral Roberts University, a private, Christian interdenominational university, is located in Tulsa, Okla. It offers "over 150 majors, minors and pre-professional programs" in six colleges, according to ORU's website. It also offers 43 graduate programs. Enrollment is listed as "over 4,000" students.

How did Oral Roberts get its name?

The university is named after its founder, Charismatic Christian televangelist Granville Oral Roberts, who was said to be obeying a mandate by God to build a university. ORU opened in 1965.

Why is Oral Roberts called the Golden Eagles?

Oral Roberts athletics teams became known as the Golden Eagles in 1993. Eli the Golden Eagle hatched from a papier-mache egg before the start of an exhibition basketball game, symbolizing the start of a new era for ORU.

Originally, Oral Roberts' athletic teams were named the Titans, with "Lady" in front of the women's team names, like many Southern schools do — Vols/Lady Vols at Tennessee, Tigers/Lady Tigers at LSU, for example.

Titans had been adopted by the student body upon the university's opening.

Oral Roberts College World Series history

Oral Roberts is making its second College World Series appearance in 2023. Their first was in 1978, and they didn't make it far, going 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament. They have never won a CWS title.

The Golden Eagles have been to the NCAA Tournament 30 times, however, and have been regional champions three times: in 1978, 2006 and 2023.

They have been Summit League Tournament champions 21 times, including back-to-back in 2022 and 2023, and Summit League regular-season champions 21 times, with this year's title their first since 2021. They were a baseball powerhouse from 1998 through 2012, winning both the regular-season and tournament championship every year.
