The trade deadline period has come to an end. Teams in contention added pieces to their roster, while those on the outside looking in set themselves up for the future by trading away pieces.
One team in particular, the San Diego Padres made some very big moves at the deadline to bolster their bullpen, and those moves drew rave reviews from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
"That bullpen is a powerhouse," Rosenthal said.
San Diego's bullpen can certainly be considered as much. They added Jason Adam, Brian Hoeing, and Tanner Scott to bolster the 'pen. They also added Martin Perez to their starting rotation.
At 58-51, San Diego is currently in control of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They have a half-game lead over the defending NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks and are also just 5.5 games back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
The Padres are certainly a threat to not only chase down the Dodgers in the NL West, but possibly even make a run to the World Series. They missed the playoffs in 2023 but did reach the NLCS in 2022, falling just three wins shy of the Fall Classic.
The additions of Hoeing, Scott, and Adam should give their bullpen a completely different look down the stretch and in the postseason should they qualify.
It will be interesting to see how these moves impact the Padres as the rest of the 2024 season plays out.
