Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes both left Friday night's game early against the Nationals, but for different health-related reasons.

Cespedes, who leads the Mets with 21 home runs and 52 RBIs, departed after three innings with a strained right quadriceps muscle and was replaced by Juan Lagares in center field.

SPECTOR: Mets are far from doomed without Matt Harvey

Syndergaard left with two outs in the fifth inning and was later diagnosed with "arm fatigue," according to the team. He had given up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. After throwing a 2-2 fastball, clocked at 94 mph, to Jayson Werth, Mets catcher Rene Rivera noticed some apparent discomfort and alerted trainers, who met Syndergaard on the mound.

The team's medical staff walked with Syndergaard, who was recently diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow, to the dugout after a brief conversation.

The injuries came hours after the Mets announced pitcher Matt Harvey would have season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Both Cespedes and Syndergaard were selected for Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game, but their participation in the Mid-Summer Classic is now in doubt.
