After earning their first Opening Day win since 2020 on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox were downed by the Seattle Mariners in a 1-0 contest on Friday night at T-Mobile Park.
Boston hasn't won their first two games to start a season since 2017 when Rick Porcello and Joe Kelly earned wins over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
On Friday, the result wasn't the fault of the pitching staff, as Nick Pivetta allowed three hits and one run (a J.P. Crawford home run in the sixth inning) while striking out 10. Josh Winckowski followed that up with two innings of one-hit, two-walk ball with four strikeouts.
It was the bats, after everyone in the lineup recorded a hit the night before, that went cold.
Boston had just four hits and three walks on the night. They even threatened in the first with runners on the corners and one out, but Trevor Story and Triston Casas, who both went 0-for-4 on the night, failed to put a run on the board.
If third baseman Rafael Devers, who was scratched from the lineup beforehand due to shoulder soreness, misses any time, someone is going to have to step up for the offense.
