The New York Yankees acquired RHP Jake Cousins from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced Sunday.
Cousins, 29, spent the 2023 season with the Milwaukee Brewers before signing a minor-league deal with the White Sox this offseason.
Yankees send cash to White Sox for Cousins
A 20th-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals, Cousins has 51 career major-league appearances with no starts under his belt. He has a career 3.08 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while posting 72 strikeouts and 37 walks in 52.2 innings pitched.
Cousins is a relief pitcher relying mostly on a slider and sinker combination with the occasional four-seam fastball. His sinker and four-seamer hover around the same velocity between 94-95 miles per hour while his slider generates an extremely high whiff rate—43.2% in 2023 and 48.4% in 2022.
Cousins works primarily as a groundball pitcher as well. What kind of role Cousins will have with the Yankees remains to be seen, but he should provide at least another arm out of the bullpen capable of generating ground balls and strikeouts.
Cousins is a cousin of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.
