The New York Yankees placed right-handed pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga on the 60-day injured list, retroactive to April 4, with a right flexor strain, the team announced Friday.

Loaisiga's injury is a big blow to the Yankees bullpen. He was serving as the setup man to closer Clay Holmes and started the year out strong. In 4.0 innings pitches, Loaisiga didn't allow a run on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees signed right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana to a Major League contract and added him to the active roster.

Despite his terrific numbers when healthy, Loaisiga has struggled to stay on the field. He appeared in just 17 games during the 2023 season due to bone spurs and inflammation in his elbow, spending two separate stints on the injured list.

The Yankees will continue to work around pitching injuries as reliever Tommy Kahnle is still working his way back from a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, ace Gerrit Cole is currently on the 60-day injured list due to elbow nerve inflammation.

Loaisiga will be eligible to return June 4.
