New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is set for another live bullpen session as he continues his way back from an elbow injury.
Cole held his first live bullpen against Oswaldo Cabrera and Jahmai Jones earlier this week, throwing 20 pitches against hitters for the first time since spring training.
Now, Cole is set to throw his next live bullpen session against hitters Saturday ahead of the Yankees' second game against the San Diego Padres, according to manager Aaron Boone.
Cole is still working his way back and will likely have one more live bullpen session after Saturday's before he takes the next step.
After that, the reigning Cy Young Award winner will have an eye on beginning a rehab assignment. He's still a while away from a return, but he didn't rule out a potential return in June.
The starting rotation has been exceptional despite the absence of its leader. The Yankees have an MLB-best 2.86 staff ERA and their 2.85 starting rotation ERA ranks third in MLB and second in the American League.
Even so, getting Cole back will make them even more formidable.
