New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone may need a deep playoff run to save his job.

Despite holding one of the best records in Major League Baseball at 80-59 — a half-game back from the division lead — Boone could find himself on the hot seat.

With a 39-40 record since June 1, the Yankees are seemingly limping into the playoffs during the final month of the season.

The team's performance in the postseason reportedly will determine whether they pick up the option in Boone's contract for the 2025 season, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

"The Yankees are awaiting the postseason before deciding whether to pick up manager Aaron Boone's option for 2025," Nightengale wrote.

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement. The Yankees signed Boone to a three-year contract following the 2021 season with a club option for 2025.

It will be interesting to see what comes of Boone's future after the season is concluded. The Yankees are not playing with enough consistency or with a killer instinct to be confident in a deep postseason run.

Boone has a 589-420 (.584) record as manager of the Yankees with a 14-17 record in the postseason. The Yankees haven't won 100 games in a season since 2019.

Boone currently ranks seventh all-time in franchise history with 589 wins and is eighth in winning percentage. He also has the most ejections for a manager in Yankees history with 39.

Even though the Yankees have some of the biggest stars in the game on the roster, there have been plenty of questionable decisions made by Boone both this season and throughout his tenure.

Given the way things have been going over the last three months, it's fair to wonder whether he will be back again.
