Most consecutive hits MLB: Twins' Jose Miranda ties all-time record, not matched since 1952, vs. Astros image

Twins third baseman Jose Miranda had a chance to make MLB history during Saturday's matchup against the Astros.

He did not throw away his shot to do so.

When Miranda came to the plate with one out in the fourth inning, he laced a base knock over the outstretched glove of Mauricio Dubon. The ball skittered into the right-centerfield gap before being cut off while Miranda remained at first base with a single.

The base knock marked Miranda's 12th consecutively, which tied an MLB record for the most consecutive at-bats with a hit.

Miranda was granted a chance to break the record with two outs in the sixth inning. He couldn't break the four-way tie for first, as he flied out to left field.

Still, Miranda's streak was impressive, and he tied a record untouched for 72 years with his white-hot stretch. Here's what to know about the company Miranda is keeping on the all-time consecutive hits list.

Most consecutive hits in MLB history

Miranda became just the fourth player in MLB history to log 12 consecutive hits in MLB history. Before him, the most recent player to achieve the feat was Walt Dropo, who did so while playing for the Tigers in 1952.

Below is the full list of players to record hits in 12 consecutive at-bats:

Denotes a streak that is still active.

It's worth noting that MLB's expansion era didn't occur until 1961, so Miranda is the only player to record 12 hits in 12 at-bats during the expansion era. The previous expansion-era record belonged to two players — Dustin Pedroia (2007) and Bernie Williams (2002) — who each logged 11 consecutive hits, per MLB.com's David Adler.

Who is Jose Miranda?

Miranda has now written himself into MLB's record books, but many are still familiarizing themselves with the 26-year-old infielder.

Miranda made his major league debut for the Twins in 2022. The team selected him in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, and he quickly established himself as a quality player, winning the AL Rookie of the Month award for July 2022.

Miranda saw his production dip from a .268/.325/.426 slash line with 15 homers as a rookie to a .211/.263/.303 line with three homers in his second season. He is putting together a great third season in 2024 and entered play Saturday with a .324/.364/.529 slash line and nine homers.

It won't be easy for Miranda to log 12-plus consecutive hits again, but he should remain a key cog in Minnesota's lineup as it looks to chase down Cleveland in the competitive AL Central.

Is Jose Miranda related to Lin-Manuel Miranda?

For those wondering why Miranda's name may be familiar, it may have to do with his relation to Lin-Manuel Miranda. The two are cousins, and the "Hamilton" creator has attended at least one of the Twins star's games in the past.

In 2023, Lin-Manuel got a chance to see Jose play at Yankee Stadium in April 2023. The Yankees beat the Twins 2-0, but the elder Miranda relished a chance to see his cousin in action.

"It's been really lovely to watch his rise," Lin-Manuel Miranda told MLB.com. "He's just so gifted and a lovely, humble guy. Our whole family is so proud. The entire cousin network is always on high alert when he's at bat."

As such, it's easy to imagine Lin-Manuel and Co. rejoicing after Jose's history-making hit in the fourth inning.

Jose Miranda stats

Below is a look at Miranda's stats from his three-year MLB career to date:

Miranda should continue to be an everyday starter for the Twins, either at third base or designated hitter, depending on whether Royce Lewis is healthy enough to man the hot corner.
