MLB trade rumors: Angels acquire outfielder Shane Victorino from Red Sox image

Shane Victorino is heading back to Southern California.

The outfielder was traded by the Red Sox to the Angels on Monday in exchange for infielder Josh Rutledge. The Red Sox will also send $3.8 million to the Angels to help pay the $4.9 million remaining on Victorino's contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, The Boston Globe's Alex Speier reported.

To fill Victorino’s spot on the roster, the Red Sox recalled outfielder Rusney Castillo from Triple-A Pawtucket. Castillo will start in right field Monday night against the White Sox.

The switch-hitting Victorino  batted .245/.324/.298 in 106 plate appearances with one home run and four RBIs for Boston this season. LA is hoping he can help improve the Angels' production in the outfield. Regular left fielder Matt Joyce has been poor at the plate (.178/.274/.298 in 278 PAs).

Victorino has been limited by mutliple injuries the past two seasons. He helped lead the Red Sox to the 2013 World Series title and was a world champion with the Phillies in 2008.

"You're getting a guy who has actually been there and had some success," Angels interim general manager Bill Stoneman told reporters, per the Los Angeles Times. "He knows what the playoffs are all about, and what getting to the playoffs is all about. He's a plus guy in the clubhouse. He's got a lot of energy, and he's a good defensive player."

Victorino, 34, began his career with the Padres in 2003 after being selected from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft. He played part of the 2012 season with the Dodgers after being traded by the Phillies.

Rutledge, 26, was acquired by the Angels from the Rockies last winter, but he has spent almost all of this season at Triple-A Salt Lake after losing a competition for the second base job to Johnny Giavotella in spring training.

UPDATE: CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports the Angels are looking to acquire another outfield bat in addition to Victorino. The Reds' Jay Bruce tops Heyman's speculation:
